After a hospital stay, families are often faced with an important question: What kind of care does my loved one need next?
Terms like skilled nursing, short-term rehabilitation, and respite care can sound similar, but they serve different purposes. Understanding the difference can help families make a more informed decision during an already stressful transition.
At Adira Medical Resort, our focus is skilled nursing and short-term post-hospital recovery, helping patients receive the clinical care and rehabilitation they need as they work toward returning home.
What Is Skilled Nursing Care?
Skilled nursing provides clinical support for patients who still have medical needs that cannot easily be managed at home following hospitalization.
Depending on the individual, this may include:
- Medication management and clinical monitoring
- IV therapy
- Advanced wound care
- Respiratory or tracheostomy care
- Complex medical management
- Coordination with physicians and other clinical specialists
At Adira, skilled nursing works alongside rehabilitation to address both the medical and functional needs that can be part of recovery.
What Is Short-Term Rehabilitation?
Short-term rehabilitation is designed for patients who are medically stable enough to leave the hospital but may not yet be strong or independent enough to return home safely.
Patients may come to Adira following joint replacement, orthopedic injury, stroke, surgery, respiratory illness, cardiac hospitalization, or general hospital-related weakness.
Based on each patient’s needs, rehabilitation may include physical, occupational, and speech therapy focused on restoring strength, mobility, function, and independence.
The goal is clear: help each patient make meaningful progress toward a safe return home.
How Is Respite Care Different?
Respite care serves a different purpose. It generally provides temporary support for someone who normally receives care at home, giving a family caregiver additional assistance or a temporary break.
Unlike post-hospital skilled nursing and rehabilitation, respite care is not necessarily centered around recovering from a recent hospitalization or completing a goal-driven rehabilitation program.
For families evaluating options after a hospital stay, understanding this distinction can make it easier to identify the level of care their loved one actually needs.
Helping Patients Move From Hospital to Home
At Adira Medical Resort, short-term recovery is about more than providing a place to stay after hospitalization.
Our nurses, therapists, physicians, care coordinators, and other clinical professionals work together to create an individualized plan based on each patient’s medical needs, functional abilities, recovery goals, and discharge objectives.
When a patient is ready to leave the hospital but not quite ready to go home, Adira provides the skilled nursing, rehabilitation, and personalized support needed to keep recovery moving forward.
